The Opposite of Love...
The opposite of love isn't hate, it's apathy... or so says Le Carre a number of times in the 3rd book of his that I am/have reading/read. I remember this as an assertion I've heard a number of times, (I know on Desperate Housewives just last year...), that I've mentally somewhat disagreed with... as apathy would still allow compassion, and that isn't the opposite of love... (Now some may argue that apathy wouldn't allow compassion, but I don't want a big arguement so shut up....)
But then, lo' and behold, I turn the page and Le Carre's sypathies change; instead the character states: The opposite of love isn't hate, it's lethargy... My God! I shouted. Even compassion can't overcome lethargy. He might be right!
